Endovascular techniques and embolisation

Lower limb arteriography

An X-ray examination of the leg arteries, performed through a simple puncture, to pinpoint a narrowing or blockage.

About 30 to 45 minutes

Angioplasty and stenting of the limb arteries

Balloon widening of a narrowed or blocked artery in the leg or arm, with a stent if needed, without any incision.

1 to 2 hours depending on the lesions

Carotid angioplasty and stenting

Treatment of a narrowed carotid artery with a stent placed from inside the artery, to reduce the risk of stroke.

About 1 to 1.5 hours

Renal artery angioplasty and stenting

Widening of a narrowed kidney artery, with a stent if needed, to protect the kidney or improve blood pressure control.

About 1 hour

Aortic stent graft (endovascular aneurysm repair)

Treatment of an aortic aneurysm with a graft placed from inside through the groin, without opening the abdomen or chest.

About 2 to 3 hours

Inferior vena cava filter placement

Placement of a small filter in the large abdominal vein to stop a blood clot from the legs travelling to the lungs.

About 30 minutes

Uterine fibroid embolisation

Treatment of uterine fibroids by blocking their arteries from the inside, without surgery and keeping the uterus.

About 1 to 1.5 hours

Prostate artery embolisation (enlarged prostate)

Treatment of an enlarged prostate by reducing its blood supply via a catheter, without going through the urethra or general anaesthesia.

About 1 to 2 hours

Varicocele embolisation

Treatment of swollen veins around the testicle by blocking the faulty vein via a catheter, without a groin incision.

About 45 minutes to 1 hour

Liver chemoembolisation

Local treatment of a liver tumour combining chemotherapy injected into its artery and blocking of that artery.

About 1.5 to 2 hours

Haemostatic embolisation (stopping severe bleeding)

Stopping severe bleeding by blocking the bleeding artery from the inside, often as an emergency and without surgery.

1 to 2 hours depending on the situation

Brain aneurysm coiling

Treatment of an aneurysm of a brain artery by filling it with fine platinum coils, via a catheter and without opening the skull.

About 1.5 to 3 hours

Dialysis fistula angioplasty

Balloon widening of a narrowing in an arteriovenous fistula to keep dialysis access working well.

About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours
