Carotid endarterectomy
Carotid endarterectomy in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord
Surgical removal of the plaque narrowing the carotid artery in the neck, to lower the risk of stroke.
What is it?

When is it indicated?
A temporary problem with speech, arm strength or vision in one eye can be the warning sign of a carotid plaque. Operating promptly reduces the risk of a more serious stroke.
After a mild stroke caused by the carotid artery, removing the plaque helps prevent another one.
In some patients, a very large plaque found during a check-up may be operated on to prevent a stroke, after weighing benefits and risks.
Some plaques look more likely to break up; they may justify surgery.
