Aortic stent graft (endovascular aneurysm repair)
Aortic stent graft in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord
Treatment of an aortic aneurysm with a graft placed from inside through the groin, without opening the abdomen or chest.
What is it?

When is it indicated?
Beyond a certain diameter, the risk of rupture becomes greater than the risk of the procedure, so treatment is advised.
A quick increase in size between two check-ups is a sign of fragility that leads to treatment.
Abdominal or back pain caused by the aneurysm requires prompt treatment.
Aneurysms or dissections of the thoracic aorta can be treated with a stent graft, avoiding opening the chest.
A stent graft puts less strain on the heart and lungs, which often makes it the best choice for frail patients.
Preparation
Procedure
General, regional or local anaesthesia depending on the case
Access to the groin arteries, by puncture or a small incision
Advancement of the folded stent graft into the aorta under X-ray guidance
Deployment of the graft, in several components if needed
Contrast injection to confirm the aneurysm is excluded from the circulation
Closure of the access sites and monitoring in the recovery room
Duration
About 2 to 3 hours
Aftercare & Recovery
The hospital stay is usually 2 to 4 days. Light activities resume quickly and strenuous effort after a few weeks. Lifelong follow-up with CT or ultrasound is essential, first in the following months and then regularly, to check that the graft remains correctly positioned.
Risks and side effects
These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
