Uterine fibroid embolisation

Fibroid embolisation in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Treatment of uterine fibroids by blocking their arteries from the inside, without surgery and keeping the uterus.

What is it?

Fibroids are very common benign growths of the muscle of the uterus. They can cause heavy periods, pain or a feeling of pelvic heaviness. Embolisation blocks the small arteries feeding the fibroids: deprived of blood, they shrink and symptoms ease, while the healthy uterus continues to receive blood. The procedure is performed in the catheterisation laboratory under local anaesthesia, combined with pain relief. A thin catheter is introduced through the groin or wrist up to the uterine arteries, then very fine particles are injected. There is no incision and the uterus is preserved. Embolisation is an alternative to hysterectomy or myomectomy, decided together with the gynaecologist. It is particularly suited to women who wish to keep their uterus and avoid an operation. If a pregnancy is planned, myomectomy is often preferred: this is discussed before the procedure. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, embolisation is performed in a latest-generation catheterisation laboratory, with appropriate pain management during the hospital stay.

When is it indicated?

Very heavy periods caused by fibroids

Heavy bleeding leads to tiredness and anaemia. Shrinking the fibroids often brings periods back to normal.

Pelvic pain or heaviness

An enlarged uterus can press on the bladder or bowel; shrinking the fibroids relieves this discomfort.

Wish to keep the uterus

Embolisation treats fibroids without removing the uterus and without an operation.

Surgery not advised or not wanted

For patients at surgical risk or who do not wish to have an operation, it is an effective alternative.

Aftercare & Recovery

The hospital stay is generally 1 to 2 nights, mainly to relieve pelvic pain in the first hours. Tiredness and a mild fever are common during the first week. Activities resume within one to two weeks. Periods improve from the first cycles and the fibroids shrink over several months; a follow-up MRI is scheduled.

Risks and side effects

Pelvic pain and tiredness in the first days, expected and treated
Infection of the uterus, rare, treated with antibiotics
Passage of a fibroid fragment through the vagina
Early menopause, rare and mainly after the age of 45
Bruising at the puncture site

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
