Thyroid and neck ultrasound

Thyroid ultrasound in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Thyroid ultrasound in Tunis: nodules, goitre, thyroiditis and neck lymph nodes examined with sound waves, without X-rays.

What is it?

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck. Ultrasound measures its volume, examines its appearance and looks for nodules; it also examines the lymph nodes of the neck. Most thyroid nodules are benign. The doctor describes each nodule (size, outline, content) and may give it a classification score, such as the EU-TIRADS score, which helps your doctor decide between simple monitoring and further tests. If a nodule needs to be analysed, an ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration may be offered: it is described on a separate page (ultrasound-guided procedures).

When is it indicated?

Thyroid nodule

It describes the features of the nodule and points towards monitoring or aspiration.

Goitre

It measures the volume of the gland and follows its progress.

Hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis

It completes the blood tests by showing the appearance of the gland.

Lymph node or lump in the neck

It clarifies the likely nature of a lump and its relation to nearby organs.

Preparation

1No special preparation is usually needed
2Wear a top that leaves the neck free and remove necklaces and scarves
3Bring your thyroid blood tests (TSH) and previous ultrasounds for comparison
4Bring your referral, previous imaging (ultrasound, X-rays, CT scan, MRI) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You lie on your back with a small cushion under your shoulders to extend the neck

2

A slightly cold gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves pass through well

3

The doctor moves a probe over the skin, pressing lightly; the images appear live on the screen

4

You may be asked to swallow or turn your head

5

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 15 to 20 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: ultrasound uses sound waves, without ionising radiation
No known risk, including during pregnancy
Painless; slight discomfort is possible when the probe presses on a tender area
No contraindications: the examination can be repeated as often as needed

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
