Testicular and scrotal ultrasound

Testicular ultrasound in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Testicular ultrasound in Tunis: pain, lump, varicocele or infertility work-up, using sound waves, without X-rays.

What is it?

A scrotal ultrasound examines the testicles, the epididymides (small tubes above the testicles) and the coverings of the scrotum. It is completed if needed by a Doppler ultrasound, which shows blood flow, in particular to look for a varicocele (dilated veins). It is requested for pain, swelling, a lump, or as part of a couple's infertility work-up. The examination is quick and carried out discreetly. Sudden, severe pain in a testicle is an emergency: it may be a testicular torsion, which must be treated within a few hours. In that case, go to the emergency department immediately, without waiting for an ultrasound appointment.

When is it indicated?

Scrotal pain or swelling

It looks for inflammation (epididymo-orchitis), fluid or another cause.

Lump in a testicle

It shows whether the lump is inside the testicle or next to it, and guides the next steps.

Varicocele

With Doppler, it shows the dilated veins above the testicle.

Infertility work-up

It measures the testicles and looks for an abnormality that could affect fertility.

Preparation

1No special preparation is usually needed
2In case of sudden pain in a testicle, seek emergency care without delay
3Bring your semen analysis or hormone tests if it is an infertility work-up
4Bring your referral, previous imaging (ultrasound, X-rays, CT scan, MRI) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You lie on your back; a towel supports the scrotum and protects your privacy

2

A slightly cold gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves pass through well

3

The doctor moves a probe over the skin, pressing lightly; the images appear live on the screen

4

You may be asked to bear down or to stand up to look for a varicocele

5

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 15 to 20 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: ultrasound uses sound waves, without ionising radiation
Painless; slight discomfort is possible when the probe presses on a tender area
An already painful area may be tender when the probe touches it
No contraindications: the examination can be repeated as often as needed

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
