Kidney and bladder ultrasound

Kidney and bladder ultrasound in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Kidney and bladder ultrasound in Tunis: stones, urinary infections, kidney dilatation and measurement of urine left after voiding.

What is it?

A kidney ultrasound examines the size and appearance of the kidneys and looks for a stone, a cyst or dilatation of the cavities that collect urine. It is often combined with an examination of the bladder (renal and bladder ultrasound), which must then be full. The examination can also measure the amount of urine left in the bladder after passing urine (post-void residual), which is useful for urinary problems. In men, the prostate can be examined during the same session (bladder, kidney and prostate ultrasound). It is a simple test, without X-rays or injection, suitable for children, pregnant women and repeated check-ups.

When is it indicated?

Recurrent urinary infections

It looks for a contributing cause: a stone, dilatation or incomplete bladder emptying.

Renal colic and stones

It shows a stone or dilatation of the kidney above a blockage.

Blood in the urine

It is part of the work-up to examine the kidneys and the bladder wall.

Difficulty passing urine

Measuring the residual volume shows whether the bladder empties properly.

Monitoring kidney function

In kidney failure or known cysts, it follows the size and appearance of the kidneys.

Preparation

1Come with a full bladder: drink about one litre of water in the hour before and do not pass urine before the examination, unless told otherwise when booking
2Keep drinking normally in the days before
3Wear clothes that are easy to remove or lift over the area to be examined
4Bring your referral, previous imaging (ultrasound, X-rays, CT scan, MRI) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You lie on your back, then sometimes on your side to see each kidney better

2

A slightly cold gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves pass through well

3

The doctor moves a probe over the skin, pressing lightly; the images appear live on the screen

4

If the residual volume is measured, you are asked to pass urine, then the bladder is examined again briefly

5

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 15 to 30 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: ultrasound uses sound waves, without ionising radiation
No known risk, including during pregnancy
Discomfort from the full bladder, which goes away after passing urine
No contraindications: the examination can be repeated as often as needed

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
