Chest ultrasound (pleura)

Chest ultrasound in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Chest ultrasound in Tunis: looking for pleural effusion and marking the site before drainage, with sound waves, without X-rays.

What is it?

A chest ultrasound examines the pleura, the membrane surrounding the lungs, and the bases of the lungs. It is particularly useful to look for a pleural effusion, that is, fluid between the lung and the chest wall. It shows the amount and appearance of the fluid and helps find the safest place for a tap (thoracentesis) when one is needed. It can also examine some lesions of the chest wall. It complements chest X-rays and CT scans, without X-rays, and can be repeated to follow an effusion over time.

When is it indicated?

Pleural effusion

It confirms fluid around the lung and estimates the amount.

Marking before a tap

It shows the safest place to sample or drain the fluid.

Follow-up of an effusion

Without X-rays, it can be repeated to follow the effect of treatment.

Preparation

1No special preparation is usually needed
2Bring recent chest X-rays or CT scans
3If a tap is to follow, tell us about any anticoagulant or antiplatelet treatment
4Bring your referral, previous imaging (ultrasound, X-rays, CT scan, MRI) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You usually sit leaning slightly forward, with your arms crossed in front of you

2

A slightly cold gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves pass through well

3

The probe is moved over the back and sides of the chest, between the ribs

4

If a tap is planned afterwards, the chosen site may be marked on the skin

5

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 10 to 20 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: ultrasound uses sound waves, without ionising radiation
No known risk, including during pregnancy
Painless; slight discomfort is possible when the probe presses on a tender area
No contraindications: the examination can be repeated as often as needed

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
