Haemorrhoid treatment by the Longo technique or laser

Haemorrhoids: Longo or laser in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Less painful alternatives to conventional surgery for some haemorrhoids: repositioning with a stapler (Longo) or shrinking with a laser.

What is it?

Alongside conventional haemorrhoidectomy, other techniques can treat some types of haemorrhoidal disease, usually with less pain afterwards. They are not suitable for every situation: the choice is made after a careful proctological examination. The Longo technique (stapled haemorrhoidopexy) does not remove the haemorrhoids themselves. Using a circular stapler inserted through the anus, the surgeon removes a ring of lining located above the haemorrhoids. This lifts them back into place and reduces their blood supply. There is no wound on the skin around the anus. Laser treatment involves inserting a thin fibre into each haemorrhoidal cushion to shrink it from the inside with heat, without removing any tissue. It is mainly suited to moderately sized haemorrhoids that bleed or prolapse only slightly. Both techniques allow a quick recovery, but the risk of recurrence is slightly higher than with conventional surgery. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, these procedures are performed in the operating theatre, usually with a short hospital stay. The surgeon explains the advantages and limits of each technique so that the most suitable one can be chosen together with the patient.

When is it indicated?

Internal haemorrhoids that prolapse but go back in (grade 2 or 3)

This is the main indication for the Longo technique: lifting haemorrhoids that slide outwards, without any wound on the skin of the anus.

Moderately sized haemorrhoids that bleed

Laser treatment reduces the size of the haemorrhoids and their bleeding, with little pain after the procedure.

Failure of medical or outpatient treatments

When diet, medication or rubber band ligation are no longer enough, these techniques offer a lighter surgical step.

Wish for a quick return to normal activities

For patients whose haemorrhoids are suitable, these techniques often allow a faster return to daily life.

Aftercare & Recovery

Patients go home the same day or the next day. Pain is generally milder than after conventional haemorrhoidectomy, and normal activities can often be resumed within a few days to a week. A feeling of heaviness or an urgent need to open the bowels may persist for a few days. A follow-up appointment is scheduled a few weeks later.

Risks and side effects

Temporary discomfort, heaviness or urgency
Bleeding, usually minimal
Recurrence of haemorrhoids, slightly more frequent than after conventional surgery
Temporary difficulty passing urine
Rare complications related to stapling (narrowing, prolonged pain), monitored at follow-up

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
