Removal of lipoma and sebaceous cyst

Lipoma and sebaceous cyst in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Removal of a lump under the skin (lipoma, sebaceous or epidermoid cyst), usually under local anaesthesia as day surgery.

What is it?

A lipoma is a soft, mobile, painless lump of fat under the skin. A sebaceous cyst (more precisely an epidermoid cyst) is a small closed pouch under the skin, filled with whitish material, often with a small central black dot. Both are benign and very common. They can appear anywhere: back, shoulders, neck, scalp, arms. Removal consists of taking out the whole lump through an incision suited to its size, following the natural lines of the skin where possible for a discreet scar. For a cyst, the pouch is removed completely to prevent recurrence. The wound is closed with a few stitches, sometimes absorbable. The removed tissue is sent for analysis under the microscope to confirm its nature. The procedure is offered when the lump is bothersome (rubbing, clothing), growing, unsightly, repeatedly infected (cyst), or when its appearance calls for confirmation. An infected, painful cyst is treated first, then removed once the inflammation has settled. Very large or deep lipomas may require imaging beforehand and general anaesthesia. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, most of these removals are performed under local anaesthesia, as day surgery, with a return home the same day and simple instructions for scar care.

When is it indicated?

Bothersome lump or one that rubs

A lump under the skin that gets in the way of clothing, a belt or a bag strap can be removed simply.

Growing lesion

A lump that is getting bigger is easier to remove early, with a smaller scar.

Repeatedly infected cyst

A sebaceous cyst that has become red and painful several times is removed once the infection has settled, to prevent further flare-ups.

Cosmetic reasons

A visible lump on the face, neck or scalp can be removed for reasons of appearance.

Unusual appearance needing confirmation

A hard lump, one that grows quickly or one that hurts is removed and analysed to confirm that it is benign.

Risks and side effects

Small haematoma or bruising around the scar
Wound infection, uncommon
Wide or thick scar depending on the skin and the area
Recurrence of a cyst if a fragment of the pouch remains, rare

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
