Anomaly scan (and obstetric Doppler)

Anomaly scan (and obstetric Doppler)

Anomaly scan in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Anomaly scan in Tunis: detailed study of the baby's anatomy, with obstetric Doppler if needed, for single or multiple pregnancies.

What is it?

The anomaly scan (morphology scan) is a detailed study of the baby's anatomy, usually performed in the second trimester. The doctor examines each organ in turn: brain, face, heart, spine, abdomen, kidneys and limbs. Growth, the placenta and the amniotic fluid are also checked. It can be combined with an obstetric Doppler, which studies blood flow in the uterine arteries and in the umbilical cord. For a multiple pregnancy (twins or more), the examination takes longer because each baby is studied separately. This scan gives a lot of information, but it has limits: a normal scan cannot rule out every abnormality, as some are not visible or appear later. If an image needs a further opinion, the doctor explains it to you carefully and refers you on.

When is it indicated?

Study of the baby’s anatomy

It checks the development of the organs in the second trimester.

Obstetric Doppler

It studies blood flow between mother and baby, useful in particular with high blood pressure or slowed growth.

Multiple pregnancy

Each baby, its measurements and its placenta and membranes are studied separately.

Checking an image seen on a previous scan

It clarifies an image that needs monitoring and helps decide on the next steps.

Preparation

1Bring your pregnancy record and previous scans
2Do not apply cream to your abdomen on the day of the examination
3Allow time: the examination may take longer if the baby is in an awkward position
4Wear clothes that are easy to remove or lift over the area to be examined

Procedure

1

You lie on your back with your abdomen uncovered

2

A slightly cold gel is applied to the skin so that the ultrasound waves pass through well

3

The doctor studies each of the baby's organs and takes many measurements; you may be asked to change position

4

If a Doppler is planned, blood flow in the uterine arteries and in the cord is studied

5

The doctor explains what can be seen during or at the end of the examination

6

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 30 to 60 minutes; longer for a multiple pregnancy

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: the scan uses ultrasound waves
No known risk to mother or baby when performed for a medical reason
Painless; the length of the scan and the pressure of the probe can be a little tiring
A normal scan cannot rule out every abnormality

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
