Mid-urethral sling (TVT, TOT) for stress urinary incontinence
Mid-urethral sling in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord
Placement of a thin tape under the urethra to stop urine leaks on exertion (coughing, laughing, sport), in a short operation.
What is it?

When is it indicated?
Leaks when pressure rises in the abdomen are typical of stress incontinence, which the sling treats effectively.
When leaks stop you exercising or carrying shopping, the operation helps you return to an active life.
If physiotherapy sessions have not been enough, the sling takes over, usually with a lasting result.
The assessment checks that the bladder works well and that the leaks come from poor support of the urethra.
When a prolapse is repaired at the same time, the sling can be placed during the same operation if indicated.
Preparation
Procedure
Admission on the day of the operation
Short general anaesthetic or spinal anaesthetic, sometimes local anaesthetic
Small incision in the vagina under the urethra
Passage of the tape above the pubic bone (TVT) or through the groin crease (TOT)
Placement of the tape without tension under the urethra
Bladder check if needed and closure of the small incisions
Check that the patient passes urine normally before discharge
Duration
About 20 to 40 minutes
Aftercare & Recovery
Patients go home the same day or the next day, once it is confirmed that they pass urine well. Discomfort in the groin or lower abdomen may last a few days. It is advisable to avoid strain, heavy lifting, baths and intercourse for about 4 weeks. Most patients find that leaks disappear or are greatly reduced. A follow-up appointment is planned.
Risks and side effects
These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
