Ankle MRI

Ankle MRI

Ankle MRI in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Ankle MRI in Tunis: ligaments, tendons (including the Achilles tendon), cartilage and bones, after a sprain or for persistent pain.

What is it?

An ankle MRI examines the ligaments, the tendons (particularly the Achilles tendon and the tendons that run around the ankle bone), the joint cartilage and the bones of the ankle and back of the foot. It is useful after a sprain that does not heal well, for persistent pain or swelling, or when a stress fracture or cartilage injury is suspected. It helps choose between rehabilitation, immobilisation or surgery. In most cases the examination is performed without an injection. Only the leg and foot go into the coil; the head usually stays outside the tunnel.

When is it indicated?

Severe sprain or one that heals poorly

It shows the condition of the ligaments and looks for associated cartilage or bone damage.

Achilles tendon pain

It distinguishes simple inflammation from a partial or complete tear of the tendon.

Persistent pain with no cause visible on X-ray

It can reveal a stress fracture, bone oedema or a cartilage injury.

Assessment before ankle surgery

It helps the surgeon plan a ligament or tendon repair.

Preparation

1Remove jewellery, watch, piercings, hair clips, bank cards and any metal object before entering the scanner room
2Tell us in advance about any pacemaker or defibrillator, implant (cochlear implant, neurostimulator, pump), surgical clip, heart valve, prosthesis or metal fragment: some are MRI-compatible, others are not
3Tell us about any orthopaedic hardware (screws, plate) in the ankle
4Tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be
5No fasting or special preparation
6Bring your ankle X-rays

Procedure

1

You change in a cubicle and put your metal objects in a locker

2

You lie on your back, feet first; your ankle is placed in a coil and supported with cushions

3

Most of the time, your head and upper body stay outside the tunnel

4

The scanner makes loud, repetitive noises while the images are being taken: headphones or earplugs are provided

5

You need to keep still during each series of images so that they are sharp

6

You stay in contact with the team through a microphone and a call bell that you hold in your hand

7

After the examination, you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 20 to 30 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by a radiologist, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: MRI does not use ionising radiation
Not possible with a pacemaker, defibrillator or implant that is not MRI-compatible, or with a metal foreign body in the eye
An injection is rarely needed; if it is, allergic reaction to gadolinium is rare
During pregnancy, MRI is only performed if it is really useful, and usually without an injection

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
