Wisdom tooth removal under general anaesthesia
Wisdom teeth in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord
Removal of impacted or poorly positioned wisdom teeth in a single session in the operating theatre, under general anaesthesia.
What is it?

When is it indicated?
When the gum over a wisdom tooth becomes inflamed and painful several times, removing the tooth solves the problem.
A tooth that cannot come through, because of lack of space or because it lies sideways, is often removed before it causes complications.
A poorly positioned wisdom tooth can damage the molar just in front of it; removing it protects that tooth.
A pocket can form around a tooth that has stayed in the bone; the tooth and the cyst are removed together.
The orthodontist or surgeon may ask for these teeth to be removed before moving the other teeth or the jaws.
Preparation
Procedure
General anaesthesia, combined with local anaesthesia for comfort on waking
Incision of the gum over each tooth
Exposure of the tooth and, if needed, division into several fragments
Extraction of the tooth and cleaning of the socket
Closure of the gum with stitches, often dissolvable
Monitored recovery, then back to the ward
Duration
45 minutes to 1 hour 30, depending on the number and position of the teeth
Aftercare & Recovery
Discharge usually takes place the same day. Swelling of the cheeks peaks around day 2 or 3 and then settles within a week; limited mouth opening is common at first. Applying cold, taking the prescribed painkillers, eating lukewarm soft food and using mouthwash after 24 hours help healing. Normal activities can usually be resumed after 3 to 7 days.
Risks and side effects
These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
