CT-guided procedures in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

CT-guided procedures in Tunis: biopsy, liver puncture, abscess drainage, joint injection, localisation or nephrostomy, under local anaesthetic.

What is it?

The CT scanner can be used to guide a needle very precisely to an area of the body that is difficult to reach. The procedure is performed by the radiologist, usually under local anaesthetic, checking the position of the needle on the images at each step. Depending on the request, it may be a biopsy (taking a small sample of a lesion for analysis), a liver puncture, drainage of an abscess or fluid collection (placing a small drain), an injection into a joint (an anti-inflammatory medicine), localisation before an operation (to guide the surgeon to a small lesion), or a percutaneous nephrostomy (placing a drain into the kidney through the skin, when urine can no longer drain). The procedure is planned with the doctor who requests it: clotting tests, possible adjustment of treatments, information on benefits and risks. Monitoring is planned after the procedure.

When is it indicated?

Biopsy of a lesion

It takes a sample of a lesion of the lung, liver, bone or a lymph node to find out what it is.

Abscess or fluid collection

Drainage removes pus or fluid without surgery, alongside antibiotics.

Joint injection

It delivers a medicine precisely into a deep joint to relieve pain.

Localisation before surgery

It marks a small lesion so the surgeon can find it easily.

Blocked kidney (nephrostomy)

A drain placed in the kidney allows urine to drain when the ureter is blocked.

Preparation

1A blood test (clotting tests) is generally requested before the procedure
2Tell us about any blood-thinning treatment (anticoagulant, antiplatelet): whether to stop it is decided by the doctor, never on your own
3You may be asked not to eat for a few hours, as instructed when you book
4Tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be: a CT scan uses X-rays
5Tell us about any allergy (iodinated contrast, local anaesthetic, disinfectant) and your treatments
6Arrange for someone to take you home, and sometimes a short hospital stay depending on the procedure
7Bring your referral, previous imaging (CT scan, MRI, X-rays, ultrasound) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You are positioned on the table in the most suitable position (on your back, front or side)

2

A first pass locates the area; the skin is disinfected and a local anaesthetic is given

3

The radiologist inserts the needle, checking its position with short CT passes; you need to keep still and follow the breathing instructions

4

The sample, drainage or injection is performed; a dressing is applied

5

You are monitored (blood pressure, pain, dressing) for a few hours after the procedure

Duration

About 30 minutes to 1 hour for the procedure, followed by a variable monitoring period

Results

For a biopsy, the sample is analysed in the laboratory; the result is sent to your doctor, who will explain it to you. For a drainage or an injection, the procedure report is given to you. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

A CT scan uses X-rays: the dose is set as low as possible while still giving useful images, and the examination is only done when it is justified
Bleeding at the puncture site or in the organ: usually minimal; hence the clotting tests
Infection: rare thanks to aseptic precautions
Temporary pain at the puncture site, relieved by a painkiller
For a lung biopsy: possible pneumothorax (air around the lung), usually not serious, sometimes drained
Sometimes a sample is not enough for a diagnosis and the procedure has to be repeated

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
