Dental CT and cone beam CT (3D imaging of the jaws)

Dental CT and cone beam in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Dental CT and cone beam CT in Tunis: 3D imaging of the jaws before a dental implant, for an impacted tooth or a cyst, without injection.

What is it?

A dental CT scan is a CT scan of the jaws (upper jaw and lower jaw) with special reconstructions that show each tooth, the thickness and height of the bone, and the path of the nerves. Cone beam CT is a similar 3D test with a low radiation dose, usually done sitting or standing. These tests are requested by a dentist, oral surgeon or maxillofacial surgeon, mainly before placing dental implants (to check there is enough bone and locate the jaw nerve), to locate an impacted tooth (a wisdom tooth, for example), or to study a cyst or an infection of the bone. No injection is needed. The examination can cover one jaw or both.

When is it indicated?

Assessment before a dental implant

It measures the available bone and locates the jaw nerve and sinuses so the implant can be placed safely.

Impacted tooth

It precisely locates a tooth that has stayed in the bone (often a wisdom tooth) and its relationship to the nerve.

Cyst or lesion of the jaw

It shows the size and extent of the lesion before treatment.

Infection around a tooth

It looks for a bone infection or sinus involvement of dental origin.

Preparation

1Tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be: a CT scan uses X-rays
2Remove removable dentures, braces, mouth piercings, earrings and glasses
3No fasting is needed
4Bring the request from your dentist or surgeon and any previous dental X-rays

Procedure

1

For dental CT, you lie on your back; for cone beam CT, you usually sit or stand with your head held still

2

A small bite block may be placed between your teeth to keep the two jaws apart

3

You need to keep still, not swallow and not move your tongue during the acquisition

4

Image acquisition is quick: from a few seconds to a few minutes

5

You can leave straight away, with no special instructions

Duration

About 5 to 15 minutes in total

Results

The images are analysed by a radiologist, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

A CT scan uses X-rays: the dose is set as low as possible while still giving useful images, and the examination is only done when it is justified
Pregnancy: a relative contraindication; a CT scan is only performed if it is essential, after medical advice
No injection: no risk related to contrast agents
Metal crowns and fillings can create artefacts (streaks on the images), which are harmless

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
