Infant ultrasounds: cranial (transfontanellar) and spinal

Infant ultrasound in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Cranial and spinal ultrasound for infants in Tunis: the baby's brain and spinal cord examined without X-rays and without pain.

What is it?

In infants, the skull bones have not yet fused: the fontanelle (the soft spot on top of the head) lets ultrasound waves through. A cranial (transfontanellar) ultrasound can therefore examine the baby's brain, without X-rays or sedation, as long as the fontanelle is open. It is often used in premature babies. A spinal ultrasound examines the infant's spine and spinal cord in the first months of life, for example when a dimple or a skin abnormality is seen at the bottom of the back (sacral dimple). These examinations are painless. The baby stays in the parents' arms or on the table, calmly; a bottle or a feed can help the baby stay settled.

When is it indicated?

Follow-up of premature babies

It looks for bleeding or a brain abnormality that is common in babies born early.

Abnormal head circumference

It examines the brain and the fluid-filled cavities (ventricles).

Sacral dimple or lower back abnormality

Spinal ultrasound checks the position and appearance of the spinal cord.

Neurological assessment of the infant

At the paediatrician's request, it completes the baby's clinical examination.

Preparation

1Bring a bottle or a dummy, or plan a feed, to soothe the baby during the examination
2Bring the health record and the birth or neonatal unit reports
3Dress the baby in clothes that are easy to open
4Bring your referral, previous imaging (ultrasound, X-rays, CT scan, MRI) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

The baby is settled in your arms or on the table, calmly

2

A lukewarm or room-temperature gel is applied to the fontanelle or to the lower back

3

The doctor gently places the probe without pressing; it does not hurt

4

You stay with your baby throughout the examination

5

The gel is wiped off; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 10 to 20 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by the doctor performing the examination, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the relevant images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

No X-rays: ultrasound uses sound waves, without ionising radiation
No sedation or injection is needed
Painless; the baby may cry if hungry or disturbed, without consequence
No contraindications: the examination can be repeated as often as needed

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
