Microbiology (bacteriology, parasitology, mycology)

Microbiology in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Identification of the bacteria, fungi and parasites responsible for an infection (urine culture, blood cultures, swabs, stool cultures) and antibiotic susceptibility testing to guide treatment.

What is it?

Microbiology looks for the agent responsible for an infection: bacteria (bacteriology), fungi and yeasts (mycology) or parasites (parasitology). The most common samples are urine culture, blood cultures in case of fever, throat, wound, genital or respiratory swabs, stool cultures and parasitological examination of stools. Once the germ is isolated in culture, the laboratory performs an antibiogram: it tests the sensitivity of the bacterium to antibiotics so that the doctor can choose the most effective treatment and avoid unnecessary antibiotics. The partner laboratory of the Centre Médical Pasteur operates day and night, which allows samples from the emergency department, the operating theatres and the inpatient wards to be handled without delay. Culture results require the germs' growth time, generally two to three days; the direct examination is issued quickly.

When is it indicated?

Urinary tract infection: urine culture

Burning, frequent urges or fever: the urine culture identifies the bacterium and the antibiogram indicates the appropriate antibiotic.

Unexplained fever: blood cultures

Taken at fever peaks, blood cultures look for a bacterium in the blood, especially in hospitalised patients.

Sore throat, wound, abscess or skin infection

The local swab isolates the germ and allows targeted treatment.

Digestive problems: stool culture and parasitology

Persistent diarrhoea or return from travel: the search for bacteria and parasites in the stools guides treatment.

Genital infections and vaginal swabs

Yeast infections, bacterial vaginosis and sexually transmitted infections are diagnosed on swabs, with molecular biology if needed.

Fungal infections of the nails, skin or scalp

The mycological examination confirms the fungus and guides an often lengthy treatment.

Preparation

1Take the sample before any antibiotic or local anti-infective treatment, or at least 48 hours after stopping it, unless the doctor advises otherwise
2Urine culture: preferably collect the first morning urine, after intimate hygiene, midstream, in the sterile container provided
3Do not wash the area to be sampled at the laboratory (wound, secretions)
4Bring samples collected at home to the laboratory without delay, labelled with surname, first name, date of birth, date and time of collection
5Close the container tightly and place it in a sealed bag

Procedure

1

Collection or sampling at the laboratory by an authorised professional

2

Direct microscopic examination and culture on suitable media

3

Incubation then identification of the germ

4

Antibiogram or antifungal susceptibility test depending on the germ isolated

5

Validation by the biologist, with an interpretation comment, and issue of the result

Duration

Rapid direct examination; cultures issued in 2 to 3 days depending on the germ, longer for some fungi

Results

The report specifies the germ identified, its quantity and its sensitivity to antibiotics. A preliminary result can be communicated to the doctor from the direct examination when the situation is urgent.

Risks and side effects

No risk linked to the analysis itself
A poorly performed collection can contaminate the sample and require a new one

These risks remain rare. Your physician will inform you in detail before the examination.
