Allergy testing and food intolerances

Allergy testing in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Identification of the allergens responsible (pollens, dust mites, foods, venoms, drugs) by specific IgE assays, and food intolerance profile by IgG testing.

What is it?

An allergy is an abnormal reaction of the immune system to a normally harmless substance, the allergen: pollens, dust mites, animal dander, moulds, foods, insect venoms, latex or medicines. Identifying the allergen involved is the essential step towards appropriate avoidance and treatment. The laboratory measures total IgE and specific IgE directed against each allergen in the blood, individually or in panels (respiratory, food, paediatric). These tests complement the skin tests performed by the allergist and are particularly useful in children, during antihistamine treatment or with reactive skin. The laboratory also offers a food intolerance profile based on the measurement of specific IgG against a wide range of foods. Distinct from allergy, intolerance shows up in a delayed way through digestive problems, migraines, fatigue or skin problems; the result, issued quickly, serves as the basis for dietary support, in liaison with the clinic's nutrition centre.
Allergy testing and food intolerances

When is it indicated?

Seasonal or year-round rhinitis, conjunctivitis, asthma

Specific IgE to pollens, dust mites, moulds and animals identifies what triggers the respiratory symptoms.

Reactions after a meal: hives, swelling, digestive problems

Food-specific IgE (peanut, tree nuts, milk, egg, fish, wheat…) confirms a food allergy.

Allergy in children

A simple blood test explores the allergies of infants and children, alongside the paediatric consultation.

Reaction to an insect sting or a medicine

Specific IgE to venoms or certain medicines helps assess the risk and adapt the course of action.

Bloating, migraines, fatigue, eczema: suspected food intolerance

The IgG intolerance profile highlights the foods to reduce, with nutritional support.

Atopic eczema

The allergy work-up looks for the allergens that maintain the eczema flare-ups.

Preparation

1No fasting needed
2Antihistamines do not interfere with the blood test, unlike skin tests
3Bring the prescription or the list of suspected allergens; describe the circumstances of the reactions
4For a child, plan for a companion and, if needed, an anaesthetic cream prescribed by the doctor

Procedure

1

Short interview about symptoms and suspected allergens

2

Venous blood sample

3

Measurement of total IgE and specific IgE, individually or in a panel

4

For intolerances, measurement of food-specific IgG

5

Interpretation and commented report by the biologist

Duration

A few minutes for sampling; results in one to a few days depending on the number of allergens

Results

The report classifies each allergen according to the IgE level detected. The biologist comments on it and the doctor or allergist derives the avoidance measures, treatment or indication for desensitisation. The intolerance profile is delivered as a table of foods, to be interpreted with the nutritionist.

Risks and side effects

Small bruise at the puncture site
A positive result indicates sensitisation, which must always be compared with the actual symptoms

These risks remain rare. Your physician will inform you in detail before the examination.
