Nerve and muscle biopsy

Nerve and muscle biopsy in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Removal of a small piece of muscle and/or nerve to help diagnose a disease of the nerves or muscles.

What is it?

Some diseases of the nerves (neuropathies) or muscles (myopathies, myositis) cause symptoms such as weakness, muscle pain or loss of sensation, without routine tests being enough to find the cause. A nerve and muscle biopsy allows a small piece of muscle and, when needed, of nerve to be examined under the microscope. The sample is taken through a short incision, most often on the leg or thigh. The nerve chosen is a small sensory nerve (often the sural nerve, on the outer side of the ankle), whose removal leaves only a small numb area on the outer edge of the foot. The muscle is chosen according to previous tests. This biopsy is always requested by a neurologist, after a clinical assessment, blood tests and an electromyogram, which guide the choice of muscle or nerve to sample. The result helps refine the diagnosis and adapt treatment. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, the electromyogram can be carried out in the neurophysiology department. The procedure is done in the operating theatre, most often under local anaesthesia as a day case. The samples are sent to a specialised pathology laboratory.
Nerve and muscle biopsy

When is it indicated?

Neuropathy of unknown cause

Tingling, loss of sensation or limb weakness whose origin has not been found by other tests.

Suspected vasculitis

Inflammation of small blood vessels can damage nerves; the biopsy helps confirm it.

Unexplained muscle weakness or pain

To look for a muscle disease such as myositis or myopathy.

Choosing a treatment

Some diseases are treated differently depending on what the sample shows.

Preparation

1Consultation and assessment by the neurologist, electromyogram
2Blood clotting tests
3Tell the team about your medication, especially blood thinners and antiplatelet drugs
4Arrange for someone to take you home

Procedure

1

Admission to the day surgery unit

2

Local anaesthesia of the area, sometimes general anaesthesia in children

3

Short incision of a few centimetres

4

Removal of a small piece of nerve and/or muscle

5

Closure with a few stitches and a dressing

6

Samples sent to the pathology laboratory

Duration

Aftercare & Recovery

Most patients go home the same day. Walking is possible straight away; it is advisable to limit exertion for a few days. Stitches are removed after ten to fifteen days. Results often take several weeks, as the analyses are specialised; they are explained by the neurologist.
