Removal of a foreign body (airways, oesophagus)

Foreign body in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Endoscopic removal of a swallowed or inhaled object stuck in the oesophagus or the airways, in children and adults.

What is it?

An object can be swallowed and become stuck in the oesophagus (a coin, a piece of meat, a fish bone, a bone, a battery, a denture), or be inhaled and pass into the airways (a peanut, a seed, a small toy, a pin). This is common in young children, but also happens in adults and older people. The foreign body must be removed quickly to avoid complications. Removal is carried out by endoscopy, in most cases under general anaesthesia. For the oesophagus, an endoscope is passed through the mouth down to the object, which is grasped with suitable forceps and removed. For the airways, a bronchoscope is used, flexible or rigid depending on age and the object, allowing the object to be seen and removed safely. The walls are then checked. The procedure is performed urgently when the object blocks breathing or swallowing, or when it is dangerous (button battery, sharp object, magnets). A sudden coughing fit after choking, even if it has settled, should lead to a medical visit: an object may have stayed in an airway. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, patients are received by the emergency department, and removal is carried out in the operating theatre or the endoscopy room, by ENT surgeons, thoracic surgeons or endoscopists depending on where the object is, with an anaesthesia team experienced with children.
Removal of a foreign body (airways, oesophagus)

When is it indicated?

Object stuck in the oesophagus

When something gets stuck while swallowing, with pain or inability to swallow even saliva, it must be removed quickly.

Suspected object inhaled into the airways

A sudden choking or coughing fit while eating or playing, followed by a persistent cough or wheeze, calls for a search for an object in the airways.

Swallowed button battery or magnets

These objects can quickly damage the wall of the oesophagus or bowel; removing them is an emergency.

Sharp or pointed object

A fish bone, a bone or a pin can injure the wall; it is removed carefully under direct vision.

Repeated chest infections in the same place

Pneumonia that keeps coming back in the same area can reveal an inhaled object that went unnoticed.

1Clinical examination and X-ray of the neck or chest, CT scan if needed

Aftercare & Recovery

In most cases, the patient goes home the same day or the next day. Throat discomfort or a mild cough may persist for a day or two. If the wall has been irritated, an adapted diet and treatment may be prescribed for a few days. A follow-up check is sometimes scheduled, particularly after an inhaled object.

Risks and side effects

Irritation or a small wound of the wall, usually minor
Temporary throat discomfort or cough
Swelling of the airways after bronchoscopy, monitored on waking
Deeper injury to the oesophagus or airways, rare, which may require further treatment

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
