Tubal ligation (female sterilisation)

Tubal ligation (female sterilisation)

Tubal ligation in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Permanent contraception for women, performed by laparoscopy, after careful reflection and full information.

What is it?

Tubal ligation is a permanent method of contraception. It consists of interrupting both fallopian tubes so that the egg and sperm can no longer meet. The ovaries continue to work normally: periods and hormonal balance are unchanged. The operation is usually performed by laparoscopy, through two or three small incisions. Depending on the technique, the tubes are closed with clips, sealed with heat, or removed entirely (salpingectomy), the latter option being increasingly offered. It can also be done during a caesarean section if the decision has been made beforehand. This is an important decision and should be considered irreversible. It is reserved for adult women who no longer want a pregnancy, after full information about other contraceptive methods, especially long-acting ones. A consultation for reflection and a waiting period before the operation are planned so that the decision can be made calmly. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, the gynaecologist takes the time to explain the method, its limits and the alternatives, and to answer questions from the patient and, if she wishes, her partner. The operation is performed as a day case.

When is it indicated?

Wish for permanent contraception

For a woman who is sure she no longer wants a pregnancy and has thought her decision through carefully.

Medical reason to avoid any further pregnancy

When a pregnancy would pose a serious risk to health, permanent contraception may be offered.

Other contraceptives unsuitable or poorly tolerated

When the pill, the coil or the implant are not suitable, ligation may be an option for a woman who wants no more children.

Performed during a planned caesarean section

If the decision was made before delivery, ligation can be done during the caesarean, with no extra incision.

Risks and side effects

Temporary shoulder pain and abdominal discomfort
Minor infection or bruising of an incision, uncommon
Pregnancy after ligation is very rare but more often ectopic: seek advice if a period is late
Possible regret years later, which is why prior reflection is essential
Injury to a nearby organ, exceptional

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
