Chin surgery (mentoplasty / genioplasty)

Chin surgery in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Surgery that changes the projection or shape of the chin to bring it into better balance with the nose and the rest of the face.

What is it?

Mentoplasty is the procedure that corrects the shape or position of the chin. A receding chin, or one that is too far forward, too long or asymmetrical, can unbalance the profile. The aim is not to transform the face, but to bring the chin into better harmony with the nose, lips and jaw. There are two main techniques. Bony genioplasty involves cutting the tip of the chin bone from inside the mouth, then moving it (forwards, backwards, up or down) and securing it with a small plate. Augmentation mentoplasty adds volume, using a chin implant or a fat transfer. The choice depends on the anatomy, the extent of the correction needed and the surgeon's opinion. Mentoplasty is often discussed at the same time as a rhinoplasty, because the nose and chin balance each other in profile. When the imbalance comes from the whole jaw and affects the dental bite, orthognathic surgery may be more appropriate. The consultation is used to sort through these options, explain the limits of each one and give the patient time to think before any decision. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, the procedure is performed in the operating theatre by a plastic or maxillofacial surgeon, with a prior anaesthesia consultation and follow-up after the operation until the result has stabilised.
Chin surgery (mentoplasty / genioplasty)

When is it indicated?

Receding chin (retrogenia)

When the chin sits too far back, the profile looks unbalanced and the neck less defined. Bringing the chin forward can improve this balance.

Chin that is too prominent or too long

A chin that is very far forward or very tall can draw attention. It can be moved back or shortened by bony genioplasty.

Asymmetrical chin

A chin that deviates to one side can be recentred to restore a more symmetrical face.

Alongside a rhinoplasty

The nose and chin balance each other in profile. Correcting them together sometimes gives a more harmonious result than a single procedure.

Aftercare & Recovery

The hospital stay is usually one day or one night. Swelling and reduced sensation in the lower lip are usual during the first few weeks. A soft diet and careful oral hygiene are advised for a few days. The result becomes clearer over a few months, with follow-up consultations.

Risks and side effects

Temporary swelling and bruising of the lower face
Temporary reduction in sensation of the lower lip and chin
Infection, rare, monitored and treated if necessary
Asymmetry or displacement of the implant, which may lead to a touch-up being considered

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
