Facial fat grafting (lipofilling)

Facial fat grafting in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Transfer of the patient's own fat to restore volume to hollowed areas of the face, without filler products.

What is it?

Facial fat grafting involves taking a small amount of fat from an area where there is an excess (abdomen, hips, inner knees), preparing it, then reinjecting it in very small quantities into the areas of the face that have become hollow: cheekbones, under-eye hollows, temples, folds, jawline, lips. With age, the face does not only sag: it also loses volume. Fat grafting corrects this loss of volume using the patient's own tissue. It can be performed on its own or alongside a facelift or blepharoplasty. It is also used in reconstructive surgery, to fill a depression after an accident, a scar or an illness. Part of the injected fat does not survive and is reabsorbed during the first few months. The surgeon takes this into account, and a second session is sometimes needed to achieve the desired volume. The result varies from one person to another; this is explained honestly in consultation, where time is also taken to listen to the patient's expectations. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, facial fat grafting is performed in the operating theatre by a plastic surgeon, most often as a day case, with regular follow-up until the volume has stabilised.

When is it indicated?

Face that has become hollow or tired-looking with age

Loss of volume in the cheeks, temples and cheekbones gives a tired look. Reinjected fat gently restores these volumes.

Hollow under-eye area

A hollow beneath the eyes creates a permanent shadow. A very fine reinjection can soften it.

Alongside a facelift

A facelift tightens the tissues but does not restore lost volume. The two procedures often complement each other.

Depression after an accident, scar or illness

A hollow caused by an injury, a scar or fat loss linked to a treatment can be filled with the patient's own fat.

Facial asymmetry

When one side of the face is less full than the other, fat can rebalance the volumes.

Aftercare & Recovery

The face is swollen and may be bruised for one to two weeks; a few days away from social activities should be planned. The final volume can be assessed after three to six months, once the partial reabsorption is complete. The fat that has taken then remains long term and ages with the patient.

Risks and side effects

Swelling and bruising of the face and the donor area
Reabsorption of part of the fat, which may warrant a second session
Minor irregularities or asymmetries, usually correctable
Infection or oil cyst, rare

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
