Spine CT scan (cervical, thoracic, lumbar)

Spine CT scan in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

CT scan of the cervical, thoracic or lumbar spine in Tunis: vertebrae and discs, for disc herniation, fracture, arthritis or spinal stenosis.

What is it?

A spine CT scan examines the vertebrae and the discs between them, in the neck (cervical spine), the middle of the back (thoracic spine) or the lower back (lumbar spine). It shows bone very well. It is requested for a fracture or injury of the spine, osteoarthritis, a narrowed spinal canal (spinal stenosis), or to look for a herniated disc when MRI is not possible. It is also used to plan or check spinal surgery. It is usually done without an injection. Depending on the request, it can cover one region or two adjacent regions (cervicothoracic, thoracolumbar…) during the same examination.

When is it indicated?

Herniated disc, sciatica

When MRI is not possible, it shows a herniated disc pressing on a nerve root.

Fracture or injury of the spine

It looks for and describes a vertebral fracture after a fall or accident.

Osteoarthritis and spinal stenosis

It shows bone spurs and narrowing of the canal through which the nerves pass.

Before or after spinal surgery

It helps plan the operation or checks the position of hardware and bone healing.

Preparation

1Tell us if you are pregnant or think you might be: a CT scan uses X-rays
2Remove belts, underwired bras, necklaces and metal objects from the area
3Tell us about any spinal surgery and the hardware fitted (screws, rods)
4If pain prevents you from lying down, talk to your doctor: a painkiller before the examination may help
5Bring your referral, previous imaging (CT scan, MRI, X-rays, ultrasound) and any relevant reports

Procedure

1

You remove clothing and metal objects from the area to be examined; a gown may be provided

2

You lie on your back; a cushion under your knees eases the lower back

3

You lie on a table that slides slowly through a wide, open ring: it is not a closed tunnel

4

You need to keep still during the pass, which lasts a few seconds

5

The radiographer can see and hear you at all times from the next room

6

You can resume your activities straight away

Duration

About 10 to 15 minutes in total

Results

The images are analysed by a radiologist, who writes a report. The report is given to you with the images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Precautions and contraindications

A CT scan uses X-rays: the dose is set as low as possible while still giving useful images, and the examination is only done when it is justified
Pregnancy: a relative contraindication; a CT scan is only performed if it is essential, after medical advice
Usually without injection: no risk related to contrast agents
Metal hardware from previous surgery may partly hinder reading of the images

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
