Pelvis, hip and femur X-rays

Pelvis, hip, femur X-rays in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Pelvis, hip and femur X-rays in Tunis: arthritis, fracture, hip replacement check, limping in children.

What is it?

These X-rays show the pelvic bones, the hip joint and the thigh bone (femur). They are requested for groin or hip pain, limping, after a fall, or to monitor a hip replacement. Depending on the request, the examination covers one side or both, from the front and/or the side, sometimes with additional views. When possible, and if it does not interfere with the area being examined, a shield may be placed over the genitals, particularly in children.

When is it indicated?

Hip or groin pain

It looks for arthritis, damage to the head of the femur or another joint abnormality.

Fall, especially in older people

It looks for a fracture of the femoral neck or the pelvis.

Hip replacement check

It checks the position of the prosthesis and that it has not loosened over the years.

Limping or hip abnormality in children

On medical advice, it complements the clinical examination in case of limping or suspected hip dislocation.

Preparation

1Tell us before the examination if you are pregnant or think you might be
2Remove belt, buckles, coins and any metal object around the pelvis
3Wear simple clothes that are easy to take off; a gown may be provided
4Tell us about a hip replacement or previous surgery
5Bring your referral and any previous X-rays or reports of the same area

Procedure

1

You remove clothing and metal objects from the area being examined, in a changing cubicle

2

You lie on your back with legs straight and feet turned slightly inwards, or stand, as requested

3

Several images may be taken from different angles, called "views": from the front, from the side (lateral), sometimes at an oblique angle

4

During each image you need to keep still for a few seconds; you may be asked to hold your breath

5

The radiographer checks that the images are sharp before you get dressed

6

After the examination, you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 5 to 15 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by a radiologist, who writes a report. It is given to you with the images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told on the day of the examination when the results will be ready.

Precautions and contraindications

Low X-ray dose; an X-ray is painless and leaves nothing behind in the body
During pregnancy, pelvic X-rays are avoided unless necessary, because the uterus is in the X-ray field
Only the position may be slightly uncomfortable if you are in pain or injured; the team adapts how you are positioned
A very fine fracture may not be visible at first: a follow-up image or another examination may be requested

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
