Elbow and forearm X-rays

Elbow and forearm X-rays in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Elbow and forearm X-rays in Tunis: looking for a fracture after a fall, elbow pain or swelling.

What is it?

These X-rays show the elbow joint and the two forearm bones (radius and ulna). They are mainly requested after a fall on the hand or elbow, which is common in children. The examination usually includes a front view and a side view; it may cover one side or both. In children, a comparison with the other side is sometimes useful, because growing bones have a particular appearance.

When is it indicated?

Fall on the hand or elbow

It looks for a fracture of the elbow, radius or ulna.

Swollen or locked elbow

It looks for joint fluid, a bone fragment or a joint abnormality.

Chronic elbow pain

It looks for arthritis or calcification.

Fracture follow-up

It checks proper healing in a cast or after surgery.

Preparation

1Tell us before the examination if you are pregnant or think you might be
2Remove watch, bracelets and rings on the side being examined
3Wear simple clothes that are easy to take off; a gown may be provided
4This is a quick examination: no fasting or special preparation is usually needed
5Bring your referral and any previous X-rays or reports of the same area

Procedure

1

You sit next to the table with your arm flat on the plate

2

The elbow is straight for the front view, then bent for the side view, without forcing if it hurts

3

Several images may be taken from different angles, called "views": from the front, from the side (lateral), sometimes at an oblique angle

4

During each image you need to keep still for a few seconds; you may be asked to hold your breath

5

The radiographer checks that the images are sharp before you get dressed

6

After the examination, you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 5 to 10 minutes

Results

The images are analysed by a radiologist, who writes a report. It is given to you with the images and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told on the day of the examination when the results will be ready.

Precautions and contraindications

Low X-ray dose; an X-ray is painless and leaves nothing behind in the body
During pregnancy, X-rays are avoided, or carried out with precautions if they are really necessary
Only the position may be slightly uncomfortable if you are in pain or injured; the team adapts how you are positioned
X-rays show bones well but soft tissues (muscles, ligaments, tendons) poorly: another examination may be suggested afterwards

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
