Hydrocele and spermatic cord cyst repair

Hydrocele and spermatic cord cyst repair

Hydrocele in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Surgical treatment of a collection of fluid around the testicle or along the spermatic cord, through a small incision.

What is it?

A hydrocele is a collection of fluid between the layers that surround the testicle. It causes swelling of the scrotum, usually painless, but sometimes bothersome because of its weight or size. A spermatic cord cyst is a small pocket of fluid located higher up, along the spermatic cord. Diagnosis is based on examination and an ultrasound scan, which also confirms that the testicle is normal. In adults, a hydrocele does not go away on its own; simple drainage with a needle is not recommended because the fluid comes back. The operation consists of opening the sac through a small incision in the scrotum, draining the fluid and turning back or removing the lining to prevent recurrence. A cord cyst is removed through a small incision in the groin or scrotum. In children, a hydrocele is caused by a channel that has remained open and is treated through the groin, like a hernia. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, the procedure is carried out as day surgery or with an overnight stay, with follow-up in consultation.

When is it indicated?

Large or bothersome hydrocele

When the scrotum becomes heavy and interferes with walking, clothing or sport, the operation solves the problem for good.

Hydrocele that is getting bigger

A sac that grows over the months will not shrink on its own in adults.

Bothersome or painful cord cyst

This small cyst is benign, but it can be removed simply if it causes discomfort.

Hydrocele in a child persisting after the age of 1 to 2 years

In infants, a hydrocele often disappears on its own. If it persists, the small channel that has remained open is closed.
