Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils)

Tonsillectomy in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Removal of the tonsils through the mouth, offered for recurrent tonsillitis or for tonsils so large that they obstruct breathing.

What is it?

The tonsils are two small organs located on either side of the back of the throat. They help fight infection in childhood, but they can become a site of repeated infections or grow large enough to disturb breathing and sleep. A tonsillectomy removes them completely. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, entirely through the mouth, with no visible scar. The surgeon separates each tonsil from its bed using fine instruments, then carefully controls any bleeding. Depending on the team's practice, the dissection may be done with cold instruments or with an electric or radiofrequency device. It is offered to both children and adults when sore throats keep coming back despite treatment, after an abscess around the tonsil, or when very large tonsils cause snoring with breathing pauses. In children, it is often combined with removal of the adenoids during the same anaesthetic. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, tonsillectomy is performed in the operating theatre by ENT surgeons, with an anaesthesia team experienced with both children and adults, usually as part of a short hospital stay.
Tonsillectomy (removal of the tonsils)

When is it indicated?

Recurrent tonsillitis despite well-conducted treatment

When sore throats come back several times a year and cause missed school or work, removing the tonsils ends this cycle of infections.

Snoring with breathing pauses during sleep

Oversized tonsils can narrow the airway at night; removing them frees breathing and makes sleep more restful.

Abscess around the tonsil (quinsy)

After one or more throat abscesses, removing the tonsils prevents this painful infection from happening again.

Very large tonsils making swallowing difficult

When the tonsils are so large that they interfere with swallowing or speaking, removing them brings real comfort.

Unusual-looking or asymmetrical tonsil

A tonsil that is clearly larger than the other or looks abnormal is removed so that it can be examined under the microscope.

Aftercare & Recovery

Discharge takes place the same day or the next day. A sore throat is normal for about ten days, sometimes with discomfort in the ears; it is relieved by the prescribed painkillers. Lukewarm or cold, smooth food is recommended at first. About 10 days of rest are needed before returning to school or work, and strenuous effort and long-distance travel should be avoided for 2 weeks. A follow-up visit is scheduled.

Risks and side effects

Sore throat for a few days, well managed with treatment
Bleeding within 2 weeks of the operation, which requires prompt medical attention
Temporary change in voice or taste
Mild fever in the first few days

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
