Gluteal fat grafting (BBL)

Gluteal fat grafting (BBL) in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Reshaping of the buttocks by transferring the patient's own fat, combined with liposuction of the neighbouring areas.

What is it?

Gluteal fat grafting, often called BBL ("Brazilian Butt Lift"), combines two procedures: liposuction of areas with excess fat (waist, hips, back, abdomen), followed by reinjection of part of that fat into the buttocks to improve their curve and volume. It is a genuine operation, under general anaesthesia, and not a minor procedure. Safety depends above all on technique: the fat must be injected only into the layer beneath the skin, above the muscle. Injecting into the muscle carries a rare but serious risk of fat embolism. Current recommendations from plastic surgery societies all point in this direction, and they are strictly applied. The result depends on the amount of fat available and the proportion that survives after injection. It varies from one person to another, and part of the volume is reabsorbed during the first few months. The consultation is used to assess whether the procedure is suitable, to discuss realistic expectations and to allow time to think. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, gluteal fat grafting is performed in the operating theatre by a plastic surgeon, with an anaesthesia consultation, a short hospital stay and follow-up after the operation.

When is it indicated?

Flat buttocks or buttocks lacking shape

When the buttocks lack volume or projection, reinjected fat can improve their shape.

Excess fat on the waist, hips or back

Liposuction of these areas slims the waist and at the same time provides the fat needed.

Asymmetry or hollows in the buttocks

A hollow at the side of the hips or a difference between the two sides can be softened.

Wish to avoid implants

For patients who prefer to use their own tissue, fat is an alternative to buttock implants.

Preparation

1Consultation with examination of the figure and assessment of fat reserves
2Time to think before confirming the procedure
3Anaesthesia consultation and blood tests
4Stopping smoking and the contraceptive pill as instructed, to limit the risk of thrombosis
5Stable weight for several months
6Obtain the compression garment and a suitable cushion

Procedure

1

General anaesthesia

2

Liposuction of the chosen areas through small incisions

3

Preparation of the harvested fat

4

Reinjection into the layer beneath the skin of the buttocks only, never into the muscle

5

Closure of the incisions and dressings

6

Fitting of the compression garment and monitoring in the recovery room

Duration

About 2 to 3 hours

Aftercare & Recovery

The hospital stay is usually one night. It is advisable to avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for two to three weeks. The compression garment is worn for several weeks. Swelling decreases gradually and the final result can be assessed at around six months, once the partial reabsorption is complete.

Risks and side effects

Bruising, swelling and pain in the treated areas
Reabsorption of part of the fat, with a variable final volume
Irregularities or asymmetries that may lead to a touch-up being discussed
Deep vein thrombosis or embolism, rare, prevented by getting up early and appropriate treatment
Fat embolism, exceptional, prevented by injecting only beneath the skin

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
