Wrist fusion (arthrodesis)

Wrist fusion in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Surgical fusion of all or part of the wrist to relieve pain caused by arthritis or a destroyed joint.

What is it?

The wrist is made up of several small bones, the carpal bones, which move against each other and against the forearm. After an old fracture, a ligament injury, osteoarthritis or an inflammatory disease such as rheumatoid arthritis, these joints can wear out. The wrist then becomes painful, swollen and weak, and medical treatment is no longer enough. Arthrodesis permanently fuses bones together to eliminate the painful movement. It can be partial: only some of the carpal bones are fused, which keeps part of the wrist's movement. It can be total: the whole wrist is fused, usually with a plate, which relieves pain while preserving forearm rotation and finger movement. It is a carefully considered operation, offered after medical treatment, splints and injections have failed. The surgeon discusses with you the balance between pain relief and loss of movement, according to your job and activities. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, wrist fusion is performed in the operating theatre by an orthopaedic surgeon, with a short hospital stay and X-ray follow-up until the bones have fused.

When is it indicated?

Painful wrist arthritis

Wear of the cartilage, often after an old fracture or ligament injury, that hurts with every effort.

Rheumatoid or other inflammatory arthritis

When the joint is destroyed by inflammation and the wrist becomes deformed.

After-effects of a fracture or ligament injury

A poorly healed or unstable wrist can progress to painful wear.

Failure of medical treatment

Splints, medication and injections no longer provide enough relief.

Failure of previous surgery

Fusion can be a salvage option after another wrist operation.

Preparation

1X-rays and often a CT scan of the wrist
2Anaesthetic consultation
3Stopping smoking is advised: it slows bone fusion
4Tell the team about your medication, especially blood thinners and anti-inflammatories
5Nothing to eat for 6 hours before surgery

Procedure

1

General anaesthesia or a nerve block of the whole arm

2

Incision on the back of the wrist

3

Removal of the damaged cartilage from the bones to be fused

4

Bone graft if needed, often taken from the same area

5

Fixation with a plate, screws or staples

6

Closure and application of a splint

Duration

About 1 hour 30 to 2 hours 30

Aftercare & Recovery

The hospital stay is usually one to two days. The wrist is protected in a splint or cast for several weeks while the bones fuse. The fingers should be moved from the first days. Fusion generally takes two to three months and is checked on X-rays. Rehabilitation then helps restore hand strength.

Risks and side effects

Failure of the bones to fuse, which may require further surgery
Finger stiffness, prevented by moving them early
Discomfort from the plate, which can be removed later
Complex regional pain syndrome or infection, which are uncommon

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
