Repair of complex wounds

Complex wounds in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Surgical management of extensive or badly torn wounds, or wounds affecting the face and hand, for good-quality healing.

What is it?

A wound is described as complex when it cannot simply be stitched: an extensive or jagged wound, with loss of skin, crushed or contaminated, a bite, or a wound affecting a delicate area such as the face, eyelids, lips or hand. A wound to the hand can reach a tendon or a nerve, even if it looks small. Treatment begins with careful exploration under anaesthesia to check the deep structures. The wound is then cleaned, non-viable tissue is removed and the repair is carried out layer by layer. If skin is missing, the surgeon can use a local flap or a skin graft. Tetanus prevention and, depending on the case, antibiotic treatment are checked. The aim is twofold: solid healing without infection and a scar that is as discreet as possible. When the wound is heavily contaminated or not recent, closure may be done in two stages, after a few days of wound care. Facial wounds are repaired with particular attention to landmarks (the edge of the lip, eyelid, eyebrow). At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, complex wounds arriving through the emergency department are treated in the operating theatre by a plastic or orthopaedic surgeon depending on the area, with dressing follow-up until healing.
Repair of complex wounds

When is it indicated?

Extensive wound or wound with skin loss

When the edges of the wound cannot be brought together, a plastic surgery procedure is needed to cover it.

Facial wound

A wound to the lips, eyelids or nose requires precise repair to preserve function and appearance.

Wound to the hand or fingers

Even when small, a hand wound can affect a tendon or a nerve; exploration in theatre makes it possible to check.

Bite or contaminated wound

These wounds carry a risk of infection and require careful surgical cleaning before any closure.

Aftercare & Recovery

Depending on the wound, the patient goes home the same day or after a short hospital stay. Regular dressings are arranged. Stitches are removed after one to two weeks. Rehabilitation may be needed for the hand. The scar continues to change over several months and can be improved later if needed.

Risks and side effects

Wound infection, monitored at dressing changes
Visible scar, sometimes revised at a later stage
Stiffness or loss of function in the event of a hand injury
Partial loss of a flap or graft, rare

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
