Penoplasty (plastic surgery of the penis)

Penoplasty in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Plastic surgery of the penis, mainly for a buried penis or after weight loss, following a careful medical assessment.

What is it?

Penoplasty covers a range of plastic surgery procedures on the penis. The most common and best-established indication is buried penis: the penis is of normal size but is hidden by excess fat and skin over the pubic area, often in a person who is overweight or after weight loss. Treatment then consists of removing this fat and skin (pubic lipectomy) and reattaching the skin at the base of the penis. Other requests concern the length or girth of the penis. Dividing the ligament that holds the penis against the pubic bone can give a modest gain in apparent length, and fat transfer can slightly increase girth. These procedures have limited and variable results; they do not improve sexual function, and dividing the ligament can alter the angle or stability of the erection. They are not recommended by professional societies for men of normal size and remain exceptional. They are only offered after an honest assessment. Many men who seek advice have a penis of normal size. The consultation therefore begins with an examination, measurements and listening to the concern being expressed. When the worry seems out of proportion, a discussion with a psychologist or sex therapist may be offered before any decision. No implant is placed; time to think is always given. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, these procedures are performed by a plastic surgeon or urologist, with respect for confidentiality, most often as a day case or with a short hospital stay.

When is it indicated?

Penis buried by excess pubic fat

The penis is normal but hidden by the fat and skin of the pubic area. Removing this excess frees it and makes hygiene and urination easier.

Excess pubic skin after weight loss

After major weight loss, the skin of the pubic area can droop and cover the penis; reshaping puts it back in place.

After-effects of surgery or circumcision

A contracted scar or a skin defect can be corrected to restore a normal appearance and comfort.

Persistent concern about appearance, after assessment

When the concern is real and expectations are realistic, a procedure for length or volume can be discussed, with modest and variable results.

Preparation

1Confidential consultation with examination, measurements and discussion of expectations

Aftercare & Recovery

Discharge is on the same day or the next day. Swelling and bruising are usual during the first few weeks. Sexual intercourse should be avoided for about six weeks. The result can be assessed after a few months. Freeing a buried penis usually brings a clear improvement in comfort; gains in length or volume remain modest.

Risks and side effects

Temporary swelling and bruising of the penis and pubic area
Infection or delayed healing
Reabsorption of the transferred fat, with an uneven result
Unstable erection or retraction (loss of length) after division of the ligament
Result felt to fall short of expectations, hence the importance of the consultation

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
