Gynaecomastia surgery

Gynaecomastia in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Correction of enlarged breasts in men, by removing the gland and/or the excess fat.

What is it?

Gynaecomastia refers to breast enlargement in men. It may be due to excess breast gland, excess fat, or most often both. Common in adolescence, it often disappears on its own; when it persists into adulthood, it can be very troublesome in daily life: clothes, sport, the beach, how others look at you. Before any surgery, a cause is looked for: certain medicines, anabolic steroids, a hormonal imbalance or an illness may be involved. A clinical examination, sometimes hormonal blood tests and an ultrasound scan, help to clarify the situation. If a cause is found, it is treated first. Depending on the case, the procedure combines liposuction to remove the fat and removal of the gland through a small incision at the lower edge of the areola. When the skin is very stretched, for example after significant weight loss, skin removal may be needed, with longer scars. The choice of technique is explained in consultation. At Clinique Pasteur Tunis, gynaecomastia surgery is performed by a plastic surgeon, most often as a day case or with one night in hospital, with follow-up until healing.
Gynaecomastia surgery

When is it indicated?

Gynaecomastia persisting into adulthood

When the breasts remain enlarged after the end of puberty, they rarely go down on their own and surgery can be discussed.

Physical or psychological discomfort

Avoiding the beach, sport or certain clothes out of self-consciousness is a legitimate reason to seek advice.

Excess fat localised to the chest

Even at a stable weight, stubborn fat can build up on the chest. Targeted liposuction can remove it.

Excess skin after weight loss

After significant weight loss, the skin of the chest may remain stretched and need reshaping.

Preparation

1Consultation with clinical examination and a search for a cause (medicines, hormones)
2Ultrasound and hormonal tests if the doctor considers them useful
3Stopping any anabolic products
4Anaesthesia consultation and blood tests
5Obtain the prescribed compression vest

Procedure

1

General anaesthesia in most cases

Liposuction of the chest through small incisions

4

Skin removal if necessary, depending on the extent of the excess

5

Closure and dressing, sometimes with a small drain

6

Fitting of the compression vest

Duration

About 1 to 2 hours

Aftercare & Recovery

Discharge is on the same day or the next day. The compression vest is worn for about a month. Office work usually resumes after a week, sport after about a month. The result stabilises over a few months, provided weight remains stable.

Risks and side effects

Haematoma or fluid collection, monitored and treated if necessary
Bruising and temporary change in sensation of the areola
Minor contour irregularities
More visible scars if skin is removed

These risks remain rare. Your surgeon will inform you in detail before the procedure.
