Long-length X-ray (whole spine or lower limbs)

Long-length X-ray (whole spine or lower limbs)

Long-length X-ray in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Long-length X-ray in Tunis: a standing full-length image of the whole spine or legs (scoliosis, leg length difference, knee alignment).

What is it?

A long-length X-ray (teleradiography) is a large-format X-ray that shows, in a single image, the whole spine (from the skull to the pelvis) or one or both lower limbs (from the hip to the ankle). It is taken standing, weight-bearing, to show the spine and legs as they are when they carry your body weight. It allows precise measurement of a spinal curve, a difference in leg length or the alignment of the knees. For the spine, it can be taken from the front only or from the front and the side; for the legs, on one limb or on both.

When is it indicated?

Scoliosis

It measures the angle of the spinal curve and helps monitor its progression, especially during growth.

Leg length difference

It measures the difference in length precisely, for example to fit a shoe insert.

Knee alignment before surgery

Before a knee replacement or alignment correction, it shows whether the legs are bowed or knock-kneed.

Assessment of posture or imbalance

It assesses the overall balance of the spine and pelvis.

Precautions and contraindications

Low X-ray dose; an X-ray is painless and leaves nothing behind in the body
During pregnancy, X-rays are avoided, or carried out with precautions if they are really necessary
In children and teenagers monitored for scoliosis, images are limited to what is useful for follow-up
Standing still may be difficult if you are in pain: let the team know

Your doctor and the radiology team will inform you in detail before the examination. Feel free to ask them your questions.

This information is general and does not replace the advice of your doctor, who chooses the examination suited to your situation.
