Testicular Doppler ultrasound (varicocele)

Testicular Doppler in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Testicular Doppler ultrasound in Tunis: examines the testicles and their blood flow (varicocele, infertility, pain), no X-rays or injection.

What is it?

A testicular Doppler combines an ultrasound of the testicles and their coverings with a study of blood flow in the testicles and in the veins of the spermatic cord. Depending on the referral, it is performed by a cardiologist, an angiologist (a doctor specialising in blood vessels) or a radiologist. It is mainly requested to look for a varicocele, a widening of the veins above the testicle, which is common and sometimes involved in male infertility. It is also used to investigate pain, swelling or a lump in the scrotum. Sudden, severe pain in a testicle is an emergency: it may be testicular torsion, which must be treated without delay; in that case, go to the emergency department immediately.
Testicular Doppler ultrasound (varicocele)

When is it prescribed?

Varicocele

It confirms the widened veins, assesses their size and looks for reflux.

Male infertility

As part of the work-up of an abnormal semen analysis, it looks for a varicocele or an abnormality of the testicles.

Pain, swelling or lump in the scrotum

It helps distinguish inflammation, a cyst or a lesion that needs monitoring.

Sudden testicular pain (emergency)

If torsion is suspected, care is given urgently; the Doppler helps check the blood flow to the testicle.

Preparation

1No fasting or special preparation is needed, unless you are told otherwise when booking
2Wear clothes that are easy to remove or roll up over the area to be examined
3Bring any semen analysis and the urologist’s reports
4Bring your referral, previous tests (Doppler ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, angiography) and any relevant reports

How the exam is performed

1

You lie on your back; a towel covers and supports the area being examined

2

A gel is applied to the skin to help the ultrasound pass through; it may feel a little cold

3

The probe is placed gently on the scrotum

4

You may be asked to strain as if having a bowel movement, or to stand up, to see whether the veins widen

5

The gel is wiped off at the end; you can return to your usual activities straight away

Duration

About 15 to 30 minutes

Results

The doctor performing the test (cardiologist, angiologist or radiologist, depending on the referral) analyses the images and measurements during the examination, then writes a report. The report is given to you and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Risks and side effects

No X-rays: Doppler ultrasound uses only ultrasound waves
No injection or contrast agent
Painless; the pressure of the probe may be tender if the area is painful
The examination is carried out with respect for your privacy

These risks remain rare. Your physician will explain them in detail before the exam.
