Penile Doppler ultrasound (erectile dysfunction work-up)

Penile Doppler ultrasound (erectile dysfunction work-up)

Penile Doppler in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord

Penile Doppler ultrasound in Tunis: vascular assessment of erectile dysfunction, with or without an injection test, on a urologist's referral.

What is it?

A penile Doppler examines the arteries and veins of the penis, to find out whether erection difficulties (erectile dysfunction) have a vascular cause: not enough blood flowing in, or blood not staying in the erectile tissue (corpora cavernosa). Depending on the referral, it is performed by a cardiologist, an angiologist (a doctor specialising in blood vessels) or a radiologist. It is usually combined with an injection test: on the urologist's prescription, a medicine is injected with a very fine needle into one of the corpora cavernosa of the penis to bring on an erection during the examination. Measurements are then taken under real erection conditions. Contraindications and precautions (blood thinners, some blood or heart conditions) should be discussed with the urologist beforehand.

When is it prescribed?

Erectile dysfunction

It looks for a vascular cause when the urologist wishes to clarify the diagnosis.

Assessment before treatment

It helps the urologist choose the most suitable treatment, medical or surgical.

Curvature of the penis or Peyronie’s disease

Depending on the urologist's opinion, it examines the penis and the blood flow in the erectile tissue.

Preparation

1No fasting or special preparation is needed, unless you are told otherwise when booking
2Tell us about any blood thinners, blood or heart condition and any allergy: contraindications to the injection test are discussed with the urologist
3Bring a list of your medicines, especially blood thinners; do not stop them without medical advice
4Bring your referral and the urologist’s reports
5Preferably come with someone, or plan not to drive if you have been advised so

How the exam is performed

1

You lie on your back in a closed room, with respect for your privacy

2

A first study of the penis at rest may be done with the probe and gel

3

For the injection test, the medicine is injected with a very fine needle into the side of the penis; the injection is brief

4

The arteries and veins are measured several times while the erection develops

5

You stay under observation until the penis returns to its resting state

6

Before you leave, you are given instructions on what to do if the erection persists

Duration

About 30 to 60 minutes, including observation

Results

The doctor performing the test (cardiologist, angiologist or radiologist, depending on the referral) analyses the images and measurements during the examination, then writes a report. The report is given to you and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.

Risks and side effects

No X-rays: Doppler ultrasound uses only ultrasound waves
Small bruise or tenderness at the injection site
Prolonged erection after the injection test: if the erection persists abnormally, seek emergency care
Brief feeling of faintness possible during or after the injection

These risks remain rare. Your physician will explain them in detail before the exam.
