Arterial Doppler ultrasound of the legs and arms
Arterial Doppler of the limbs in Tunis, Tunisia · Centre Urbain Nord
Arterial Doppler ultrasound of the legs and arms in Tunis: checks for narrowed arteries (pain when walking, diabetes, smoking), without X-rays.
What is it?

When is it prescribed?
Pain that forces you to stop and then fades at rest suggests narrowing of the leg arteries.
In people at risk, it detects artery disease before complications appear.
It checks whether enough blood reaches the foot for healing.
It checks that the treated artery stays open over time.
It looks for narrowing of an artery in the arm.
Preparation
How the exam is performed
You lie on your back, with your legs or arms uncovered depending on the area studied
A gel is applied to the skin to help the ultrasound pass through; it may feel a little cold
The probe follows the arteries from the groin down to the feet (or from the shoulder to the wrists)
You may hear a rhythmic whooshing sound: this is the sound of blood flowing, picked up by the Doppler
A blood pressure cuff may be inflated at the ankle and arm to measure the ankle-brachial pressure index
The gel is wiped off at the end; you can return to your usual activities straight away
Duration
About 20 to 40 minutes
Results
The doctor performing the test (cardiologist, angiologist or radiologist, depending on the referral) analyses the images and measurements during the examination, then writes a report. The report is given to you and sent to your doctor, who will explain the results and the next steps. You will be told when to expect it on the day of the examination.
Risks and side effects
These risks remain rare. Your physician will explain them in detail before the exam.
